Transforming Ecosurety’s data platform
Ecosurety is a trusted packaging EPR compliance scheme that helps businesses comply, optimise, and reduce the impact of their packaging.
Ecosurety undertook a major strategic modernisation of its data environment to support increasing regulatory complexity, business growth, and the ambition to deliver data-led advisory services alongside compliance operations.
By industrialising its most critical processes, Ecosurety has created a resilient platform capable of supporting both regulatory excellence and future innovation. The transformation demonstrates that meaningful data modernisation is not about replacing systems, but about restructuring how data, logic, and ownership interact.
The objective was not simply to upgrade technology, but to redesign how data flowed through the organisation, making it scalable, auditable, and insight-ready.
The challenge
Ecosurety’s services depend on accurate, repeatable packaging data calculations. As demand grew:
- Critical workflows relied on Excel and Power Query based tooling.
- Business logic was embedded in files rather than systems.
- Data ingestion was slow and repetitive.
- Scaling services risked increasing manual effort rather than efficiency.
This created a classic scaling barrier: operations were accurate and effective but not automated or industrialised.
The vision
Ecosurety worked with key partners, Freeman Clarke and Billigence, to build a platform that could:
- Treat calculation engines as reusable products
- Provide a governed, auditable data foundation
- Scale without adding operational overhead
- Enable advisory and analytics services from trusted datasets
The transformation
The programme introduced a modern data architecture built on three principles:
- Productise what matters
Core submission calculations were rebuilt as structured data products rather than spreadsheet workflows. - Establish a trusted data core
Snowflake became the single governed source of truth, fed by clean, auditable, and controlled data ingestion. - Separate responsibilities across the stack
● Over 200 validations and analyst orchestration are managed via Streamlit.
● DBT handled transformation and testing.
● Alteryx enabled accessible ingestion and mapping.
● Governance and audit were embedded throughout.
The results
Operational gains: faster processing cycles, reduced manual intervention, and repeatable, testable calculations.
Risk reduction: elimination of spreadsheet dependency, full auditability of outputs, controlled deployment and change management, robust cyber security, and strong data governance.
Scalability: platform handles increasing client and data volumes without redesign, and new services can be layered onto existing models.
Cost efficiency: lower infrastructure waste, reduced need for temporary operational resourcing.
Strategic outcomes
The modernised platform now enables Ecosurety to expand from compliance delivery into insight-driven services, including packaging data advisory, scenario modelling for clients, policy and sustainability analytics, and international service scaling.
Data is no longer just processed, it can now power Ecosurety’s clients to remove unnecessary packaging.
Looking ahead
With the foundation in place, Ecosurety is focused on deepening governance, expanding analytics capability, and building new value propositions powered by trusted environmental data.
